Go Retro!
In a couple of weeks I will be hosting my third annual retro party.
The idea was originally inspired by a 70s theme party I attended, honoring a friend's 40th birthday. The party guests all dressed in 70s clothing. The house was decorated with lava lamps, beaded curtains, and psychedelic posters. A disco ball revolved in place of the ceiling fan. The music had a decidedly disco beat.
The following year, thinking the event would be twice as much fun on a larger scale, I rented a local VFW lodge and hired a DJ. I invited everyone I knew and instructed them to extend the invitation to their friends. I charged folks $15/pp to attend, which only partially offset the cost. (I feared a more hefty admission price would keep people away.) A friend who works in public relations served as the party MC. We had 70s trivia contest and a hula hoop competition. The highlight of the evening was the costume contest. We cleared the dance floor and selected three male and three female guests as finalists. Each finalist had about 20-30 seconds to illustrate his or her "bad moves" on the dance floor in an effort to win the favor of the audience. The winners were selected by audience applause and the prize was a collection of 70s music on CD.
70s
Last year, in response to requests from my younger co-workers, the party honored the 1980s. In place of the hula hoop contest, we did 80s karaoke. Aside from that, the format was the same.
80s
A survey among past guests requesting input concerning this year's party theme, resulted in a tie between the 1960s and 1970s. I'm splitting the difference and doing a 1964-1978 time period - Beatles to Disco. At this point, I'm anticipating about 45 guests. Any of you bloggers with a desire to travel to the northeast and shake your groove thang, just let me know!
In the meantime, keep on truckin' and party on!

Tish: No need to cite me. That post is off my main page now anyway!
Yes, Texas is a little far to travel - even for a really great party!

Mr. & Mrs. McG: You don't live THAT far. You could make it. You could dress little McG up as Yoda and he'd fit right in!! We had Darth Vader and Princess Leah at the 70s party 2 years ago and Indiana Jones made an appearance at last year's 80s party.
Mike: Texas is a bit of a haul, but I bet you and your bride could use a little vacation.
